Marketing is inherently a famous subject for Vietnamese international students thanks to its creativity, freshness, and excitement.
Capturing the students’ need to learn about Marketing in Canada, on April Fool's Day, VAS held the first episode of the Marketing Series with our first guest speaker, Tanny Nguyen - Marketing Coordinator at Agility PR Solutions.
Let's listen to Tanny's sharing about her unique and creative experience while studying and working in Canada!
When I came to Canada, I made up my mind to get PR in this country. This helps me to always be motivated and force myself to constantly move forward as well as to have psychological preparation when coping with difficulties.
One helpful piece of advice is to set yourself goals and that will be the power to get what you want!
As a person with a background in finance as well as having worked in Vietnam, I knew what I wanted and decided to follow Marketing, although there were many opinions that studying Marketing was difficult and challenging when I'm not a native worker.
However, I liked new things and wanted to contribute my ideas and initiatives, and Marketing fit that need. If you are not good at understanding Canadian culture, you can always try digital marketing instead.
When I felt hesitant or lacked confidence in myself, I often read The Magic of Thinking Big. It helped me overcome my fear and believe what I was doing. In addition, I often listen to the Marketing Pook Podcast as well as subscribe to newspapers such as Business Insider, Social Media Today as well as learn more about Digital Marketing or tools to update Marketing trends.
Also, as a marketing student, you should pay attention to networking to find opportunities in the industry. A little tip is not to forget the network with your professor and peers because maybe that's where the opportunities might come from!
It’s not important whether you pursue a degree or a diploma, it will not affect much when you apply for a job. The important thing here is the skill, you must understand the job and how to get the job done.
When identifying what skills to learn, look for the major you want to work in and then focus on developing the skills of that industry.
In terms of marketing, some technical knowledge you need to have are advertising certificates, HTML, CRM, and especially Hubspot and Salesforce. You can access these sites and there will be certified courses to help you improve your skills!
In terms of soft skills, enhance yourself in time management, project management, budget, teamwork, and presentation skills. In marketing, the most important thing is that you can describe your ideas to people correctly.
